Attar oils are unique perfume fragrances and aroma oils that have been used for thousands of years for worship and meditation within some of the world’s most ancient religions, and by royal families as body fragrance oils. The word ‘attar’ comes from an ancient Persian word ‘attar’, ‘otto’ or ‘ottar’, that means perfume, fragrance or scent. These special perfumes, believed to be the oldest in the world, are concentrated scents that have been extracted from flowers, herbs, and even various types of wood and bark. They are generally distilled into an oil base, such as sandalwood oil.
In Persia, the Middle East, India, and other ancient and rich cultures, the history of attar oils is as old as civilization itself. Several archeological escavations revealed royal residences with copper dishes used for making and applying attar. In the ancient scriptures such as the Bible, Vedas, Qur’an, Zend Avesta etc, we can find several references to perfumes which were used for both worship and sensual enjoyment. The fragrant herbs and roots now used in these body perfume oils were found in jungles after shepherds found perfume scents still lingering in the wood that ascetics had burned in order to stay warm in the winter. The ascetics were known to add perfumed herbs and roots to their fires. Upon this discovery, people searched out these forest ingredients and began to experiment with making perfume oils. Often the scents were derived from holy plants or flowers and worn as a sacred perfume scents or used to anoint someone. While attar oils have been used for thousands of years by elite and royal families in India, as well as by those living around the Mediterranean Sea and in the Near East for sensual enjoyment, they are also used as altar offerings to the Divine. Royalty was known to add drops of attar oil to their baths. Sikhs, Buddhists and Hindus use these perfume fragrances in meditation practices. Sufis, which are those who practice the mystic branch of Islam, consider these aroma oils to be one of the most treasured material possessions, a beloved gift that has been given to human beings.
These non alcoholic fragrance oils, non-irritating to most skin types, are becoming increasingly popular in the West, where the scents are unlike any traditional perfume found here.
