Release Love Into the Air

Have you ever wanted to get into the mind of that someone special and turn on their love button? Well, thankfully, the glorious combination of Mother Earth’s bountiful gifts, centuries of romantic tips and recent scientific proof for the skeptics among you, make us confident in what we’re about to tell you: It’s all about the nose.

Okay, we know that doesn’t appeal to the romantic-lying-in-wait inside each and every one of us, so do let us flower it up a bit.

Create the environment for romance and, well, we can’t say whether or not true love will flourish, but at least the optimum conditions will have been created. The stage will be set, shall we say.

We’ve all experienced how a scent, good or bad, can immediately transport us back in time. Just a whiff of a specific fragrance or odor can bring a tsunami of memories. Why doesn’t this happen in the same way as when we see or touch something? Our olfactory senses in the nose are quite unique in that they immediately stimulate the limbic system in the brain. We won’t get into the complexities of this set of brain structures, but we will connect the dots between what you smell and why this immediately affects your mood. Among many things, the limbic system supports our emotions and behavior, and plays a role in memory formation. It influences the involuntary nervous system as well as the hormone-secreting endocrine system, which releases the oft sought-after dopamine and other endorphins that heighten sensitivity to enjoyable sensations. It is also keenly interconnected with what is commonly referred to as the “pleasure center” of the brain.

FILL THE AIR WITH THE SCENT OF LOVE

By now, I think you know where we’re heading with this fool-proof romance mood-setter that’s been tried and perfected over thousands of years with special incense blends, resins, essential oils, perfumes, herbs and candles. Simply block out external distractions to enable communication, release an aroma that creates feelings of relaxation and other pleasantries into the air, and feel how the vibrations around you change. But don’t be mistaken; it’s not all about creating a loving mood for the other. Spiritual seekers of many religious paths also fill their environments with specific aromas, but with God in mind. Incense, resin, attar oils and other fragrant mediums are used to enhance devotional practices for God such as worship and kirtan, and even to help internalize their focus during yoga and meditation.

AROMAS FOR LOVE

For centuries, sandalwood has been called an aphrodisiac with its natural fragrance near that of the human pheromone called alpha androsterole. This alluring aroma that instills a sense of peace with its woody yet sweet fragrance is an anti-depressant that not only creates deep relaxation in the nervous system but also subdues anxiety. This creates the condition for romance to flourish as it guides one away from the mind’s distractions and towards the senses.

Frankincense is a tree resin with a natural fragrance that is both rich and sensual with the properties of helping to alleviate stress, anxiety, and concern, while elevating the mood. Create a romantic evening or relaxed social gathering with lavender, widely used to calm, balance, relax and soothe the environment and body, setting the scene for a romantic evening. Though this is a floral aroma, men also enjoy its fragrance when blended with others.

Rose petals have been used for centuries as an aphrodisiac.
